We generate insights on the dynamics of complex fluids and soft matter systems through experiments, theoretical analysis, and simulation.  Aims of the research include enabling the efficient control and processing of these materials which are used in a wide range of industries, products, and emerging technologies.  Much of our work examines particle suspensions, as seen in these images of (from left to right) a simulation and experiment on sedimentation and the self-organization of rods in a shear flow from an initially random state to an aligned one.  We also study the dynamics of macromolecules in microfluidic devices.  Example images of DNA trapped within a microfluidic channel appear on the right.
